Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is an effective solution for many skin conditions, relieving many of pain and discomfort.
What is cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is a treatment that involves the use of extremely cold temperatures to freeze and destroy skin growths or abnormalities. Largely non-invasive, this procedure is used to treat various skin conditions, including warts, skin tags, and certain types of skin cancer.
How does cryotherapy work?
Cryotherapy works by applying liquid nitrogen to the affected area, which rapidly freezes the tissue. This process causes the cells to die and eventually fall off, allowing healthy skin to regenerate in its place.
The treatment is quick, typically lasting only a few minutes, and is performed in our clinic by our experienced team.
How should I prepare for treatment?
In most cases, you do not need to do anything to prepare for cryotherapy. We will advise you on any special circumstances beforehand.
What can I expect after the treatment?
After the treatment, the area will likely be red and swollen and can occasionally form a fluid filled blister. The swelling will subside over a couple of days and the area will become dry like a scab. After 10 days to two weeks the scab will come off and the skin underneath will typically be pink before becoming paler over the next couple of months, often leaving a small white mark.
What conditions do you treat with cryotherapy?
Lesions: This includes warts, skin tags, and other skin growths.
Actinic Keratosis: Treats rough, scaly patches caused by sun damage.
Seborrhoeic Keratosis: Non-cancerous skin growths that often appear in older adults.
Certain types of skin cancer: Including superficial basal cell carcinoma and Bowen's disease (Squamous cell carcinoma in situ).
Frequently Asked Questions
Cryotherapy is generally a very effective procedure as it is minimally invasive, fairly quick to perform, and quick to heal. However, it can also lead to some discomfort and other side effects, such as redness, swelling, and blistering. These downsides typically accompany all skin treatments, as it is difficult to remove a skin growth without your body reacting negatively.
Cryotherapy can cause some discomfort, but the level of pain varies depending on individual tolerance and the specific condition being treated. Some pain is normal and should subside within a week after the procedure. If you experience any pain after this period then you should contact a medical professional.
Cryotherapy is generally effective for many skin conditions, including warts, skin tags, and certain types of skin cancer, but it does not always guarantee success. Some conditions may require multiple sessions, and there is a possibility of recurrence. Your body may not react well to cryotherapy either – if this occurs, we will explore other options.
