What is a mole check?
A mole check is a specialist dermatology appointment to assess your moles and screen for early signs of skin cancer. Using a dermatoscope (a handheld magnification device), we examine each mole's structure, looking for suspicious patterns that might suggest melanoma or other skin cancers.
During your check, we examine each mole's characteristics, look for changes, and identify any that may warrant further investigation such as mole mapping or biopsy.
Who should consider a mole check?
- • You have multiple moles (20+) on your body
- • You have a family history of skin cancer or melanoma
- • You've noticed changes in existing moles
- • You have fair skin and significant sun exposure history
- • You're concerned about specific moles (ABCDE characteristics)
- • You've had previous skin cancer or suspicious lesions
How a mole check works
Visual examination
We visually examine all areas of your skin, noting mole distribution, number, and general characteristics — which help us assess your individual risk level.
Dermatoscopy
Using a dermatoscope, we magnify each mole up to 10x to assess its internal structure, colour patterns, and borders — features that help us identify melanomas and atypical moles.
Discussion and recommendations
We discuss our findings, recommend next steps (observation, mole mapping, or biopsy if needed), and provide advice on sun protection and self-monitoring between visits.
